As part of our efforts to assist communities, clients and stakeholders make decisions related to development we conduct thorough Traffic Studies around all our projects or as third-party consultants. These studies provide information related to the positive and negative impacts new developments will have on existing roadways and what new features will be required for large-scale projects. As part of our complete range of engineering studies, they give an accurate and reliable view of how a project will affect a local community.
Traffic Impact Studies
At the core of our studies related to traffic is the Traffic Impact Assessment. Our Specialized Studies department looks at how a development will alter traffic on interior, adjacent and nearby roads and traffic control points. Added volume is assessed, using measurement barometers such as average daily trips, to determine possible increases in congestion. We measure the impact of an increase in traffic volume on access points to existing roads and traffic control points along main routes leading to and from the development site. Through analysis of our research findings, we recommend developments to local roadways as part of the final assessment.
Beyond traffic volume, other possible negatives are assessed and ways of mitigation are recommended. These include the impact on air pollution, the economic impact of introducing more traffic to an area, and the far-reaching effects on smaller side roads and urban areas.
Outcomes / Recommendations
Outcomes of our Traffic Studies help determine if a development project is to be undertaken immediately, postponed, or reevaluated at the design level. Possible outcomes and recommendations include adjustments to existing traffic control points or the introduction of new ones, new signals and turn lanes added to the existing system, ramps being used in the case of expressways, and new roads planned where necessary.
Evaluation / Assessment
Our final assessment will assist stakeholders understand the full impact their development will have on the traffic of a given area. Due to the thoroughness of our studies and the vast experience our team has in conducting them, our evaluations and assessments can be trusted.
